Evidence from Identified Particles for Active Quark and Gluon Degrees of Freedom

چکیده
Measurements of intermediate pT (1.5 < pT < 5.0 GeV/c) identified particle distributions in heavy ion collisions at SPS and RHIC energies display striking dependencies on the number of constituent quarks in the corresponding hadron. One finds that elliptic flow at intermediate pT follows a constituent quark scaling law as predicted by models of hadron formation through coalescence. In addition, baryon production is also found to increase with event multiplicity much faster than meson production. The rate of increase is similar for all baryons, and seemingly independent of mass. This indicates that the number of constituent quarks determines the multiplicity dependence of identified hadron production at intermediate pT . We review these measurements and interpret the experimental findings. PACS numbers: 25.75.-q, 25.75.Ld Submitted to: J. Phys. G: Nucl. Phys.

8 Theorists calculate that this drastic change in the structure of matter sets in over a narrow range of temperatures centred around 10 12 K. To gauge the change, it is instructive to compare the degrees of freedom — the number of different particles that energy can go to. On the hadronic side of the transition, the important particles at these temperatures are just the pions (the other hadrons...
متن کاملSalient Features of Hadronization, Deconfinement and Heavy Quark Probes at RHIC
We present experimental features of identified particle production from nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC. These features reflect hadronization from a deconfined partonic matter whose particle formation scheme is distinctly different from fragmentation phenomenology in elementary collisions. Multi-parton dynamics, such as quark coalescences or recombinations, appear to be essential to explain ...
متن کاملDynamical quasiparticles properties and effective interactions in the sQGP
Dynamical quasiparticle properties are determined from lattice QCD along the line of the Peshier model for the running strong coupling constant in case of three light flavors. By separating time-like and space-like quantities in the number density and energy density the effective degrees of freedom in the gluon and quark sector may be specified from the time-like densities. The space-like parts...

I give a brief overview of recent theoretical developments concerning the high temperature phase of QCD, and the structure of hadronic wave functions at high energy. 1. From the “ideal gas” to the “perfect liquid” The study of ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions offers the possibility to address several fundamental questions, concerning for instance the state of matter at very high temperat...

We report on an experimental comparison of the characteristics of quark-induced jets based on an analysis of jet events selected from hadronic events at c.m. energy of 60 GeV in e+e- annihilations. The triangle plot shows that the majority are two-jet events. The three-jet events are also present but not as many as two-jet events. The mean transverse momentum is larger for three-jet events th...
